There's a particular kind of tech house producer more interested in patiently refining a feeling than endlessly reinventing the wheel. Modal Citizen's debut EP belongs firmly to that lineage, drawing heavily from the warm, swing-loaded pulse of early-2000s tech house. 'Play & Play' opens with supple percussion and rubberised bass pressure before sly melodic hooks begin surfacing through the mix, while 'Rising' drifts into hazier territory with soft-focus synth work and shuffling drums. 'After The Tone' stretches things further into after-hours hypnosis, and 'On Ya Mind' closes the record with enough smoked-out propulsion to carry dancers through the final stretch of the night. Simple ingredients, executed with real finesse.
