British producer Darren Roach has been quietly refining his take on tech house for years and this third outing on Archivio Records suggests he remains more interested in durable dancefloor craft than passing trends. Inspired by a trip to New York, the four-track set draws heavily from the city's restless energy. 'A Free Democracy' opens with a muscular bassline and a stream of vocal snippets that lend the groove a sense of urgency, while 'Schizzle My Schnizzle' takes a deeper route, pairing fizzing percussion with a wonderfully elastic low-end that recalls the genre's late 90s heyday. Elsewhere, 'Feel The Rhythm' arrives loaded with dubbed-out vocals and enough forward momentum to trouble any peak-time dancefloor. Best of all may be 'The Train Of Thought', whose hypnotic chug and field recordings from the New York subway transform a simple DJ tool into something far more evocative.
